What is halitosis (bad breath)?

Halitosis is the scientific name for the unpleasant odor of the breath. It is quite a common problem in the world. More than 80 million people indeed have chronic halitosis. It is not a disease, but more a symptom that something is wrong in your digestive tract. The causes can multiple: problem with your digestive tract, food between the teeth or in the mouth leading to accumulation of bacteria, cigarettes, alcohol, and plaque buildup.

Essentials oils to use to diminish bad breath

Two essential oils are mostly recommended for bad breath:

  • Tea tree oil has potent disinfectant and antiseptic properties. It will kill bacteria that are likely to cause bad breath.
  • Lavender oil is also antiseptic, and is helpful for the digestive tract in general. Furthermore, it helps reducing the odors.

If the bad breath is due to dyspepsia (indigestion), you can try Nutmeg, Peppermint and Rosemary, which have digestive properties and will help! See the page dedicated to essentials oils for indigestion for more information.

You can do a gargle by diluting a few drops of each oil in a glass of water, or you can mix a drop of essential oil with some toothpaste before brushing your teeth. Be sure to do a deep cleaning before, to ensure no food is left in your mouth.
