Herbs for amenorrhea

Herbs with emmenagogue properties are the classic treatment, as they stimulate blood flow in the pelvis area and can trigger the menstrual process. These herbs can help:

  • Chilco, a very good emmenagogue herb that will boost blood flow and might induce menstruation in a safe way.
  • Sage and Calendula have the same emmenagogue property, and also can reduce uterine contractions. Therefore, they can use also in case you have painful menstruations (dysmenorrhea), not only lack of menstruation. Sage and Calendula are also antibacterial herbs, useful if amenorrhea might be linked to bacterial infection.
  • Finally, you can also use Wormwood and Paico, which are emmenagogue too.

If you are stressed or anxious, that might be a cause of menstruation problems too. Consider choosing herbs that have a relaxant or slightly sedative effect. The most recommended one is Lemon Balm, which is known to ease menstrual cramps and reduce migraines and headaches.

Warning: the herbs above are classified as emmenagogues. they can really help if your periods are scanty or delayed. however, you should avoid these herbs if you might be pregnant. none of them should be used during pregnancy, during at least the first half. in the second half, the risk of miscarriage is diminished. however, if you can, we recommend to use herbs that are not emmenagogues. feel free to consult us if needed to get a selection.

Women whose menstrual flow is normal or heavy need to avoid these when choosing an oil to disperse period pain, as their use may cause the period to become very heavy. See the page about dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation).

Some women suffer from periods that are always abnormally heavy. If you are in this case, have a look at the page enorrhagia(heavy periods).
