What is bloating? What is flatulence?

Everyone produces gas and eliminates it by burping or passing it through the rectum. On average, most people produce 0,5 to 1 liter of gas per day. Excess production, or refraining to eliminate gas cause bloating (stomach feels tense due to excess gas).

Intestinal gas comes from two main sources: swallowed air and the breakdown of undigested foods by bacteria naturally present in the colon. Air swallowing (aerophagia) is a common cause of gas in the stomach. We all swallow some air when eating and drinking. The other cause is undigested food passing into the large intestine, where bacteria may break it down, producing the gases hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and sometimes, methane.

Recommended herbs for flatulence and bloating

The properties useful in case of flatulence and bloating are the following:

  • carminative (reduce production and facilitate elimination of gases),
  • antispasmodic (decrease stomach cramps),
  • antibacterial (kill harmful bacteria that produces gases with strong odor).

Several herbs have these 3 properties:

  • Lemon verbena, which is also slightly relaxing. Useful if your indigestion might be related to stress.
  • Chamomile, which also has healing and anti-inflammatory properties. Useful if you think your stomach.
  • Thyme, which is also astringent and antiseptic. It will reinforce the lining of the stomach.

Fennel is also well known for its beneficial effect on the digestive tract. Furthermore, it is also an analgesic. Therefore, if your indigestion causes painful cramps, it might be interesting to add Fennel to one of the three herbs described above.

Finally, Pennyroyal is known to facilitate digestion.

Recommended combinations:

  • Pennyroyal + (Lemon verbena, Chamomile OR Thyme)
  • Add Fennel in case of painful cramps, to reduce dolor.
