Best herbs when suffering from constipation

There are many herbs that can help reduce the discomfort of constipation. The main property to look for when choosing an herb is laxative (facilitate passage of feces). You can also use herbs that are antispasmodic, and/or antidepressant, when stress or depression are a cause of constipation. For example, before important stressful events like exams.

Here is a list of herbs to consider:

  • Boldo is the first one to try: it has a mild laxative effect. Therefore, it is a good choice if you are not too constipated, or if it is the first time you try an herb for constipation. It is better to start with a mild laxative, rather than going too strong.
  • Contrayerba: this herb is a laxative too. It has vermifuge properties. Therefore, it is an interesting choice if you think constipation is due to intestinal parasites. The herb will kill parasites and facilitates their removal through elimination of feces.
  • Sen de Alejandria: this herb has both laxative and purgative effects. The laxative facilitates elimination of feces, and the purgative will empty the stomach. To use if you think you have eaten something wrong and need to clean the stomach.
  • Aloe vera: Aloe vera is a powerful laxative. You should use a little, and we recommend to use it only after trying the other herbs that have milder effect.

If your constipation is linked to stress/depression, consider taking Lemon Balm or Valerian along with other herbs, to reduce the stress.

If you suffer from chronic constipation, we recommend you to take magnesium supplement. This might be more beneficial on a long-term than using only herbs. See the page upplements for constipationfor more information.
