The first attack of gout is characterized by intense pain, usually involving only one joint. The first joint of the big toe is affected in nearly half of first attacks and is at some time involved in more than 90% of individuals with gout. If the attack progresses, fever and chills will appear.

Herbs for gout

The properties that are useful for gout are:

  • Diuretic herbs to help flush toxins from the body through increased urination,

  • Rosemary and Nettle root are anti-inflammatory, and are interesting due to the fact they also promotes blood circulation (which can contribute to uric acid elimination from the joints).

Finally, to prevent future attacks of gout, you might be interesting in knowing that cherries are particularly effective in lowering uric acid levels and preventing attacks of gout. Cherries, hawthorn berries, blueberries, and other dark red-blue berries are rich sources of constituents called anthocyanidins and proanthocyanidins. These compounds give those fruits their deep red-blue color, and have the ability to prevent breakdown of collagen in connective tissue.

As these berries are not available all year, it is interesting to use dried powdered berries. You can use them in yoghurt or smoothies for example.
