What are hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are abnormally large or painful conglomerates of vessels, supporting tissues, and overlying mucous membrane or skin of the rectal area. You can notice that you might have them if you see bright red bleeding on the surface of the stool, on the toilet tissue, and/or in the toilet bowl. In most industrialized countries, hemorrhoids are extremely common. It is estimated that around 50% of those over 50 years of age have hemorrhoids.

The causes of hemorrhoids are similar to the causes of varicose veins: genetic weakness of the veins and/or excessive pressure on the veins (caused by defecation, pregnancy, physical exertion, for example).

Interesting herbs when suffering from hemorrhoids

You can use two types of herbs to help alleviate hemorrhoids symptoms:

  • Apply topically herbs that are anti-inflammatory (soothe inflamed tissues) or astringent (will reduce bleeding if present, and tighten the veins locally).
  • Take capsules or drink infusion of herbs that reduce constipation (laxative, purgative).

Herbs to reduce constipation (to take internally):

  • Sen de Alejandria,
  • Burdock,
  • Mallow.

Anti-inflammatory and astringent herbs (to apply topically):

  • Great plantain,
  • Calendula.

Any combination of two herbs might help. Take care not to use internally the astringent herbs. They will not hurt, but they might increase constipation, which is the opposite effect of what you are looking for.

To apply topically, the easiest method is to do an infusion with an infusion bag, they leave the infusion cool down a little and soak a compress in it before applying on the anus.
