Most recommended herbs for insomnia

Numerous plants have sedative action. They will help you improving sleep quality without any of the side effects of sleeping pills. Herbs commonly prescribed as aids in promoting sleep include: Valerian, Lavender, Bitter orange, Lemon Balm, Linden. All these herbs are sedative.

Within this list, the herb that has been the most researched is valerian. More than 20 studies have now evidenced valerian ability to improve sleep quality and relieve insomnia. They have shown that valerian root improve sleep quality and reduce the time needed to fall asleep. Furthermore, valerian usually reduces morning sleepiness, contrary to drugs sold by drug companies.

However, using only Valerian would be an error, especially if you need help with sleeping over a long period of time (more than a week or two). Indeed, if you take always the same plant, the body might get accustomed to it. If you use 3-4 different herbs and change herb every 2-3 days, you will be able to benefit from the sedative properties for a longer period of time. This is also why you should not use every day the same leep infusioncontaining the same exact mix of herbs.

Take the plant 45 minutes before bedtime. See the plant page fore more information on dosage.
