What is lupus?

Lupus (also known as Systemic lupus erythematosus or SLE) is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system harms the body's tissues. This can result in inflammation or damage to joints, skin, kidneys, heart, lungs, blood vessels, and brain.

Lupus is often an aggressive disease that needs aggressive treatment. In mild to moderate cases, symptom relief can be attained through the use of nutritional supplements or botanical medicines. In severe cases, drug therapy may be necessary, at least in the acute phase. However, do not abandon natural measures, because they might actually enhance the effectiveness of the drugs, while providing a foundation for healing.

Herbs to alleviate lupus symptoms

It would be wrong to say that an herb can treat lupus. The only thing you can get from herbs is to alleviate some symptoms. However, it can means a lot for people suffering from this condition.

Below a list of herbs that can be useful:

  • Dandelion is diuretic, which means it boost the production of urine and elimination of toxins. It might be useful to get rid of uric acid deposited in joints (an inflammatory compound that is responsible of the pain, see the page about Gout for more information).
  • Nettle is anti-inflammatory, and will therefore be able to reduce pain linked to inflammation of the body. It is recommended for rheumatic diseases.
  • Flaxseed has been shown in one study to help reduce kidney problems in people with lupus. If this is your case, Flaxseed might be interesting to consider.
  • Curcumin, extracted from Turmeric, has been studied a lot for its anti-inflammatory properties. It can be useful to reduce inflammation for people with lupus.
