What is stress?

Stress can be described as anything that disturbs the normal balance of mental and physical health. Stress factors may be mental, physical or environment in origin. For example, an accident or injury is a source of physical stress: bad lighting, noise, polluted air or ugly, dehumanized surroundings are sources of environmental stress.

However, we tend to think more of the mental/emotional aspects, such as worries about work, finance, relationships or even the threat of nuclear annihilation. We forget that stress from any source makes us less able to withstand stress from any other source: for example, when we are worried, we may have minor or major accidents and we are more prone to 'catch' infectious illnesses when we are emotionally drained.

Herbs for stress

They are different herbs that can be beneficial if you suffer from stress. But to choose wisely, it is best to distinguish two types of stress that require different remedies:

Herbs for mild/moderate stress that is constant (or recurrent)

If you are in a periods of life where stress can be predicted (before an exam, a job interview, during the few days/weeks where the pressure is steadily growing), you can manage this stress ahead of time and use herbs to minimize the impact.

Let have a look at the recommend herbs:

  • Lavender and Chamomile are the first herbs to try for this type of stress. Both have a relaxant effect, and only very mildly sedative. Therefore, there is no risk to use them during the day.
  • Lemon balm is useful to reach a state of calmness, which can last up to six hours, according to research. It can also boost your mood.
  • You can also try Vervain. It has similar proprieties to the herbs mentioned above, and is useful if you experience stress for a long period. This will allow you to change herb used from time to time. Therefore, your body will not become accustomed to one particular plant.
  • Finally, if you have difficulties to sleep, Valerian root is good. Please note however that it works better at maintaining sleep than at inducing sleep.
  • If stress causes you recurring headaches, you should try feverfew. It is a very good remedy for both migraine and tension headaches.

Herbs for acute stress that occurs punctually

There are times when life becomes overwhelming. Immediate herbal relief may be needed for a whole range of traumatic situations, from being involved in a car accident to personal emotional crisis.

Many plants capable of easing intense stress are also considered risky due to too dangerous side effects. Therefore, we will focus on plants that are safe.

You can use:

  • Valerian, which is relaxing, and is also one of the plants with the more potent sedative effect. The root of the plant is famous for its help in treating anxiety and sleep disorders. It will reduce stress but can lead you to feel drowsy. Therefore, do not use if you have a car to drive for example!
  • Bitter orange can also be used in this case. It has a sedative effect, although less strong than Valerian. Up to you to decide which works the best.
