What is urethritis?

Urethritis means inflammation of the urethra, which is the tube carrying urine from the bladder to the outside. When suffering from this health condition, urination is frequent and often painful. You might also experience heat, or a stinging sensation. If not treated quickly, inflammation may travel upwards into the bladder leading to cystitis, especially in women (due to the fact that women urethra is shorter than men one).

Most urethritis is caused by bacteria (notably E. coli) present in the gut. When they stay there, they are harmless, but can become a threat when they migrate to other parts of the body.

Herbs for urethritis

Let have a look at the different herb you can use in case you suffer from urethritis:

  • Juniper is probably the most recommended herb for urethritis, as it is an antiseptic herb, which has been found to be especially potent to clean infection of urinary and respiratory tracts.
  • Cranberry is also a potent supplement to prevent urinary tract problems such as urethritis. However, the juice you can find in some shops usually contain a lot of added sugar, due to the fact that cranberry juice alone has a bitter taste. As fresh cranberries are only available during summer, the solution is too use dried powdered cranberries. You can added a teaspoon of cranberry in a yoghurt or smoothie, that the easiest way to use it.
  • Finally, to slow down inflammation, or avoid bacteria to come back, it is useful to use diuretic herbs that will promote production of urination, therefore helping to flush the bacteria out of the urethra. Two recommended herbs for this purpose are Andean horsetail, and dandelion.
