What are varicose veins?

Veins are fairly frail structures. Defects in the wall of a vein and excessive pressure lead to dilation of the vein and damage to the valves. When the valves become damaged, the higher static pressure results in varicose veins. This is due to the fact that valves no longer break up the gravitational pressure and are not able to send back the blood to the heart.

Varicose veins affect nearly 50% of middle-aged adults. The subcutaneous veins of the legs are the veins most commonly affected, owing to the gravitational pressure that standing exerts on them. When an individual stands for long periods, the pressure in the vein can increase by up to 10 times. Hence, individuals with occupations that require long periods of standing are at greatest risk for development of varicose veins.

Women are affected about four times as frequently as men. Obese individuals have a much greater risk. Pregnancy, which increases venous pressure in the legs, may also lead to the development of varicose veins.

Herbs suitable when having varicose veins

Let first have a look at look at the interesting properties that you must look for when selecting an herb to help alleviate varicose veinssymptoms:

  • Tonics herbs help to strengthen tissues. Astringents help tissues to contract and can support the work of the vascular tonics
  • Flavonoid-rich herbs or fruits are especially useful here to reinforce the veins and vessels. However, it is a long-term treatment, not a quick fix.
  • Anti-inflammatories can reduce inflammation and discomfort.
  • Depurative herbs will clean the blood of impurities
  • Emollients lessen local discomfort by softening skin.

Here are the herbs to consider:

  • Great Plantain is depurative and astringent, to clean blood and to reinforce veins. It also has emollient and anti-inflammatory properties, which may reduce discomfort.
  • Cochayuyo is known to help reducing weight and cholesterol, which has a positive effect on varicose eins. Therefore, it is good herb for obese/overweight people, or people suffering from high cholesterol. Reducing cholesterol might indeed get a positive effect on circulation in arteries/veins. Reducing weight might reduce pression on legs when walking and thus facilitate return of blood to the heart. It should be taken along with Great Plantain, which has other benefits.
  • Berries containing flavonoids can be helpful to reinforce the veins. You can find flavonoids in Maqui berries, blue berries and cranberries.

Varicose veins being usually localized in a specific part of the body, it is good to also use an essential oil diluted in carrier oil, in order to do a massage of the area. See the page dedicated to essential oils for varicose veins.
