What is amenorrhea?

Amenorrhea means there is a problem with menstruation. But to recognize an abnormal menstruation, you have to know what is your usual menstruation pattern. On average, it is 28 days, with a range of 18 to 40 days, and it should not vary from more than 5 days. Blood loss is 80-100mL on average. If you think you might have heavy menstruations, see the page related to menorrhagia.

Amenorrhea is divided into three categories:

  • primary amenorrhea: this is the case of women who do not begin to menstruate when expected. As there can be a wide variation between women, primary amenorrhea is considered when menstruation has not started by the age of 16 years.
  • secondary amenorrhea: this means cessation of menstruation after at least one normal period. This is quite common, and can be due to pregnancy, stress, loss/gain of weight, anemia, or side effects of some drugs.
  • irregular menstruation: the case of women who may have only 3-4 periods in a year, or 2-3 very close together followed by none for a few months. Several causes are possible, similar to those for secondary amenorrhea.

Supplements for amenorrhea

Several supplements may help women suffering from amenorrhea. Most of them will help you deal with any deficiency you might have, as these deficiencies are often contributing factors.

Omega 3

Deficiency of omega 3 may be an underlying cause of amenorrhea. Nowadays, classic diets are high in omega 6, which are inflammatory compounds that hurt our bodies. Without enough intake of omega 3, it might cause imbalance in our body and prevent normal menstruation. Taking a supplement of omega 3 helps to balance our body and hormonesproduction.

Calcium + Vitamin D

Women who do not have periods are at higher risk of osteoporosis, and increasing your intake of calcium and vitamin D may help keep your bones strong. Calcium needs vitamin D to be more easily absorbed by the body. Vitamin D is produced by the skin when it is in the presence of sunlight. However, apart when living near the equator, you usually don get enough sun for your body to produce enough vitamin D. A supplement of vitamin D will boost calcium absorption and increase your bone health.

Vitamin B6

Some women do not have menstruation due to a high level of an hormone called prolactin (the hormone that tells your body to produce milk after pregnancy). Vitamin B6 has been found to reduce high prolactin levels. Therefore consuming more vitamin B6 may help to inhibit the production of prolactin and restore menstruation. However, it is recommended to try this solution after the other solutions, when you are pretty sure your diet is adequate and is not the problem.
