What is angina pectoris?

Angina, also called angina pectoris, is a pain in the chest, which can be recurring and usually informs us that the heart is not supplied with enough blood and thus enough oxygen. This disease can be the result of coronary arteries that are blocked, most of the time due to fat/cholesterol that has deposited on the inner walls of these arteries.

It most often occurs due to strong physical exercice, when the heart needs an extra dose of oxygen to supply to the whole body. Emotional stress, alcohol or cigarette smoking can also be triggers.

Do not confuse angina attack and heart attack. The pain will look like the same, but an angina no last more than five minutes usually. Yet, it still is a strong indicator that something is wrong.

Supplements for angina

L-Arginine

L-Arginine supplementation can be helpful for several cardiovascular diseases, including angina pectoris. L-arginine is an amino acid, which has been found to improve blood flow and allow people with angina to exercise longer without pain.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)

Coenzyme Q10 is an important for your heart's health, as it seems to improve its efficiency and lessens the heart's demand for oxygen. Several studies have found that taking a supplement of CoQ10 may help people with angina to exercise more without pain.

L-carnitine

L-carnitine is another amino acid. It has been found to help reduce symptoms of angina, according to several studies. Caution though: if you are using blood-thinning medications such as coumadin, or thyroid hormone, you should know that L-carnitine can potentially interact with them.
