Supplements for anorexia

People suffering from anorexia are usually deficient in a lot of minerals and vitamins, as their diet is very poor. Therefore, they might actually benefit from a lot of supplements. However, the goal here is not list 10 supplements that will replace your diet. We listed only the supplements that can help in increasing appetite, so that the person can slowly start to eat more.

Zinc

Zinc seems the most useful to start with, as a zinc deficiency alterate the senses of smell and taste. The sensory receptors that give us pleasure of eating need this mineral to work properly. Therefore, anorexia leads to a decreased pleasure of eating, so people are eating even less. Taking a supplement of zinc can help replenish the level of zinc in the body, so that the person suffering from anorexia restarts to like eating.

Omega 3

Omega 3 fatty acids, such as the one found in fish oil, have been found to boost appetite too. They also help to reduce inflammation, and can boost your immune system, as well as helping fight depression (which often occurs amongst anorexic people).

Probiotics

When suffering from anorexia, you may not have eaten a normal diet for a while. Therefore, it is likely possible that your digestive system is not at his best. By taking a probiotic supplement, you will boost the intestinal flora, which will avoid digestive problems when gradually increasing your food intake.

Herbs

When choosing herbs for anorexia, you need to focus on two types:

  • herbs that will boost your appetite and tone your digestive system, so it can cope with the increased amount of food you are going to use,
  • herbs that can tone your nervous system, and can help fight the mild depression that is often linked to anorexia.

To boost your appetite:

  • Fenugreek is the herb to start with. It is an herb that stimulates appetite, and helps to improve your digestion. You can take a capsule 2-3 times daily, usually one hour before meal hours, or a little bit more, so it boosts your appetite at the normal eating time. This will help you to go back to a normal eating schedule.
  • Chicory is very useful too. It is a digestive tonic that will boost the production of gastric juices (Chicory is a very appropriate stomach tonic that stimulates the production of gastric juices so that it helps with digestion and appetite.

To help your nervous system:

  • Linden, is one of the most recommended for "nerve problems", to tone your nervous system. Drink 3-4 infusions per day
  • Valerian is another useful herb, which has been traditionnaly used for people suffering of mild depression, and also for nervous exhaustion, insomnia or stress.
  • Lemon balm is our last recommendation to boost of the nervous system. It will work well for anorexia, but also for insomnia and palpitations.
