Supplements for asthma

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is very important to the health of the lungs, as it is a major antioxidant. The substantial increase of asthma over the past 20 years can indeed be partially explained by the reduced dietary intake of antioxidant nutrients. Taking vitamin C is especially recommended when pollution levels are high, notably during winter.

Magnesium

Clinical studies have revealed magnesium beneficial effect in the treatment of patients with acute attacks of bronchial asthma. Taking magnesium supplements appears to be a good idea according to research, because most of the time, lower levels of magnesium have been found in asthmatic patients compared to people not suffering from asthma.

Vitamin D

In studies, vitamin D deficiency is linked to reduced lung function, and worse asthma control. One study of more than 1,000 children with asthma showed that 35% had insufficient levels of vitamin D. Lack of vitamin D status was associated with higher risk of hospitalization or emergency visit.

Taking vitamin D supplements may improve asthma control by blocking the cascade of inflammation-causing proteins in the lung.
