What is bloating? What is flatulence?

Everyone produces gas and eliminates it by burping or passing it through the rectum. On average, most people produce 0,5 to 1 liter of gas per day. Excess production, or refraining to eliminate gas cause bloating (stomach feels tense due to excess gas).

Many people do not realize that having flatulence (passing gas) 15 to 20 times a day is normal. Gas is made up primarily of odorless vapors: carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, and sometimes methane. The unpleasant odor of flatulence comes from bacteria in the colon that release small amounts of sulfur-containing gases.

Intestinal gas comes from two main sources: swallowed air and the breakdown of undigested foods by bacteria naturally present in the colon. Air swallowing (aerophagia) is a common cause of gas in the stomach. We all swallow some air when eating and drinking. The other cause is undigested food passing into the large intestine, where bacteria may break it down, producing the gases hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and sometimes, methane.

Supplements to reduce bloating and flatulence

There are not a lot of supplements that can help. Most of the solutions are herbs or essential oils, which you can find on dedicated pages: herbs o essential oils for bloating.

As far as supplements are concerned, probiotics seems the most useful to reduce bloating and flatulence. Healthy bacteria contained in probiotics help break down foods, and destroy the harmful bacteria that cause inflammation or the creation of gases containing sulfur (the gas that smells bad). Furthermore, they contribute to the general health of the digestive system, so they are worth trying.
