What is cholesterol?

High-level cholesterol is not a disease in its own. However, it is a major factor in the development of many cardiovascular diseases, especially arteriosclerosis.

You don have to eliminate all cholesterol. Cholesterol indeed has an important role to play in human health. Cholesterol is found in all cells of the body, primarily as a structural component of cell membranes, and it has many vital functions. Blood cholesterol levels begin to increase during your twenties, but rise sharply beginning at around age 40 and continue to increase until age 60. The higher the blood cholesterol level, the higher the risk of heart disease.

There are two forms of cholesterol: LDL is a form of lipid often called "bad" cholesterol, because too much LDL in the blood can lead to blockage in the arteries. HDL is a form of lipid known as "good" cholesterol, because HDL helps remove cholesterol from the blood.

Best supplements to reduce cholesterol

Niacin

Niacin (vitamin B3) lowers total cholesterol. Furthermore, in studies, it was found to typically lower LDL cholesterol (the bad one) by 16 to 23% while raising HDL cholesterol (the good one) by 20 to 33%

Despite the fact that niacin has demonstrated better overall results in reducing risk factors for coronary heart disease compared with other cholesterol-lowering drugs, doctors are often reluctant to prescribe it. Why? Maybe because niacin is a widely available drug. Therefore, it does not offer the huge profits that the drug companies enjoy with the specific drugs :-) It is important to note that it can also flush the skin.

Note: to be useful in lowering cholesterol, you need to consume at least 500mg per day. yet, due to the fact that chilean law defines that niacin concentration must not exceed 20mg per capsules for a product to be considered as a supplement. above 20mg, the product is considered as drug. therefore, we cannot sell a useful niacin supplement on this website for now. we need to go through a time-consuming and costly registration process.

Meanwhile, we recommend you to take omega 3 supplements, which also have a lowering-cholesterol effect.

Omega 3 fish oil

Fish oils decrease LDL cholesterol (the bad one) and increase HDL cholesterol (the good one). Some studies found that it might be better than statins (the most widely use cholesterol-lowering drugs) to boost HDL.

CoQ10

This supplement does not reduce cholesterol. Yet, it is a good option when you are taking statins. Taking CoQ10 supplement decrease muscle pain, which is generally associated with statin treatment.
