What is cystitis?

Cystitis is an inflammation of the wall and lining of the urinary bladder. It may notably be due to bacterial infection. Symptoms of cystitis include difficult urination (dysuria), bloody urine, and pain and tenderness in the lower abdomen. The urine itself may be cloudy and have an unpleasant smell.

Acute urinary tract infections are very common, affecting at least 15 % of women at least once in their lives. Urinary tract infection is about 20 times more common in women than in men and can occur at any age. Women are more likely than men to be affected because the urethra is much shorter in women, allowing bacteria easier access to the bladder.

These infections are usually caused by bacteria called Escherichia coli. These are normal bacteria found in the bowel, which, after a bowel movement, can be accidentally wiped onto the urethral opening.

Cranberry

Cranberry is an interesting possible alternative to antibiotics in the prevention and treatment of urinary tract infection. The most likely explanation for cranberry beneficial effects are some of its components (known as proanthocyanidins) interfere with the adherence of bacteria to the cells that line the urinary tract. In order to cause an infection in the urinary tract, bacteria must first attach to these cells. So when the bacteria are blocked from attaching, an infection can be prevented or at least reduced.

Most cranberry juices on the market contain one-third cranberry juice mixed with water and sugar. Since sugar has such a detrimental effect on the body health, use of sweetened cranberry juice cannot be recommended. It is better to use 100% cranberry juice (difficult to find) or dried cranberries or blue berries, which you can find below on this page.
