What is depression?

Depression is more than the sadness many people feel periodically. It combines despondency, hopelessness, apathy, and a lack of well being, and can persist for some time. There may be physical symptoms. In the world, one person in 25 feels depressed enough at some point in their life to seek professional help.

The official definition of clinical depression is based on the following eight criteria. If you have more than 4, you are depressed:

  • Poor appetite accompanied by weight loss, or increased appetite accompanied by weight gain
  • Insomnia or excessive sleep habits (hypersomnia)
  • Physical hyperactivity or inactivity
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities, or decrease in sexual drive
  • Loss of energy, feelings of fatigue
  • Feelings of worthlessness, self-reproach, or inappropriate guilt
  • Diminished ability to think or concentrate
  • Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide

Interesting supplements to consider during depression

Zinc is the supplement mostly recommended in case of depression. Zinc is used by more than 100 enzymes in our body, to do a lot of things (making DNA, protein synthesis, cell division). Zinc is also critical for hormonal balance, and for the sensory organs (smell and taste, in particular) to properly work.

Studies have shown that people suffering from depression often have a low level of zinc. And they evidenced too that patients with the lower level of zinc in their body tended to have major depression, while those with ess lowlevel tended to have minor depression.

Zinc might not be the complete solution to get rid of all depression symptoms (and if your symptoms are serious, it might be better to see a doctor). However, zinc is a good supplement to take in order to alleviate symptoms.
