What is dysmenorrhea?

Dysmenorrhea, or painful menstruation, is the most common of all gynecologic complaints and the leading cause of absenteeism of women from work, school, and other activities. In addition to identifiable pathological causes, a number of constitutional factors may lower the pain threshold and thus appear to worsen dysmenorrhea.

Common factors include anemia, increase in obesity, chronic illness, overwork, stress in general, diabetes, and poor nutrition.

Supplements for dysmenorrhea

The following supplements may help relieve menstrual pain:

Calcium + Vitamin D

Calcium is mostly useful for premenstrual syndrome (see page about PMS). Some studies have found that it might help reducing painful menstruation due to its toning effect on muscles. If you decide to take a supplement of calcium, we recommend to also take vitamin D, which is used to help your body to absorb and use the calcium.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E has been found to help reducing menstrual pains occurring before and after periods. In a study concerning 100 women, half took vitamin E, and half a placebo (a pill with no active substance inside) during 5 days (2 days before menstruation, 3 days after). The young women who tool vitamin E reported decreased pain compared to the others.

Magnesium

Magnesium is known as the elaxant mineral It is useful to reduce stress and tension. Its relaxant effect has been found to also reduce menstrual cramps. However, don exceed the dosage, as too much magnesium can induce diarrhea and reduce your blood pressure.
