What are gallstones?

Gallstones are hard stones that form in the gallbladder, composed of solid material (usually cholesterol and bile pigments). They can be small as a grain of sand, but also large as a golf ball. The gallbladder can contain a single large stone or many smaller ones. They are notably caused by diet, body weight and gallbladder movement.

People most likely to develop gallstones are women between 20 and 60 (especially pregnant or using birth control pills), men/women over age 60, overweight people

Gallstones are an example of disease caused by a wrong diet. Estimations suggest that between 5 to 22% of the population in the world have gallstones. Persons with gallstone disease or a history of gallbladder removal have a shorter life span, due to increased mortality from gallbladder cancer and cardiovascular disease. Obesity, diabetes are primary risk factors for gallstones.

Supplements for gallstones

Several supplements can have an effect on gallstones. The two most potent are detailed below:

Soy lecithin

Lecithin is considered as the main cholesterol solubilizer in bile, meaning that it allows the cholesterol to dissolve in bile, rather than staying solid. Therefore, a lack of lecithin has been found to contribute to gallstones. Studies have found that taking a supplement of lecithin can have a direct effect on solubilization of cholesterol in the bile. Therefore, it reduces the probability of formation of gallstones in your gallbladder. This supplement must be seen as a preventive, as it does not show significant effects on reducing already created gallstones.

Omega 3 in fish oil

Taking a supplement of fish oil has been shown to reduce gallstone formation. Omega 3 contained in fish oil improves the acid content of bile, increases the solubility of cholesterol in the bile, and lower triglycerides. This effect makes this supplement a very useful one in gallstone prevention and treatment.
