What are headaches?

Most headaches are due to anxiety, stress, physical tension, fatigue, stimulants, allergy, eyestrain, or low blood sugar. Pain results from strain on the head or neck muscles or congestion (too much blood) in the blood vessels supplying them.

There are two types of headaches.

  • Tension headaches usually have a steady, constant, dull pain that starts at the back of the head or in the forehead and spreads over the entire head, giving the sensation of pressure or a feeling that a clamp has been applied to the skull.
  • Migraine headaches are vascular headaches characterized by a throbbing or pounding sharp pain. See the migraine page for help on this one.

Suitable supplements for headaches

Supplements must be addressing the conditions that trigger tension in the neck muscles. Since the neck is an area of the body that often holds tension produced by psychological stress, it is especially important to relax neck muscles. In addition, it is important to address any structural factors that may be triggering tension headaches.

Magnesium

Magnesium oxide is frequently used in pill form to prevent migraine, usually at a dose of 400-500 mg per day. Magnesium reduces the pain, and also prevents the narrowing of blood vessels (that increases pressure and causes the pain).

Vitamin D

In studies about headaches, it has been noted that people suffering from these tension headaches often show a deficiency of vitamin D. Taking supplement of vitamin D during a few weeks has been shown to reduce the frequency and severity of headaches.

Omega 3

Fish oil can reduce the blood pressure, due its omega-3 fatty acids content. Therefore, it decreases pain associated with those terrible headaches. It can be used to prevent headaches or reduce their severity, but is also an interesting treatment once the symptoms present themselves.
