What is herpes?

Herpes is a recurrent viral infection of the skin or mucous membranes characterized by the appearance of small fever blisters (also called cold sores) on a reddened base, frequently occurring about the mouth, lips, genitals, and even eyes. It occurs following minor infections, trauma, and stress or sun exposure and has an incubation period of 2 to 12 days with an average of 7 days.

Herpes is frequently acquired in early childhood. After the initial infection, in most people the virus becomes dormant in the nerve cells. In others, however, it can be reactivated. This reactivation causes recurring outbreaks. Men seem more susceptible to recurrences.

Supplements for herpes

Zinc

Taking a zinc supplement has been shown to be effective for herpes in clinical studies. It is an effective inhibitor of Herpes virus replication, and it enhances cellsimmune system. In studies, people using zinc saw a faster healing of blisters than those not using it.

Vitamin C

Oral consumption of vitamin C increases the rate of healing of herpes cold sores. Patients reported fewer days with blisters and fewer cases of worsening of symptoms. This is likely due to the fact that vitamin C naturally boost the immune system.

L-Lysine

A diet rich in lysine and low in arginine has become a popular treatment for herpes infections. This approach came from research showing that lysine has antiviral activity. And also because herpes virus replication requires arginine. Therefore, lysine supplementation and avoidance of high-arginine foods have been suggested to be appropriate.
