What is hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism, also known as myxedema, is under activity of the thyroid that results in deficiency of thyroid hormone. Inadequate secretion of thyroid hormone leads to a general slowing of all physical and mental processes.

The signs and symptoms, all of which result from this slowdown of metabolism, range from nonspecific complaints to severe symptoms that may become life threatening if unrecognized and untreated. Fatigue, lack of energy, cold intolerance, severe constipation, heavy menstrual periods, and weight gain despite a diminishing appetite may go unnoticed or be attributed to other conditions, such as stress, depression, and overwork. As symptoms worsen, they may become more obvious with time. These can include slowed pulse, muscle aches, puffiness around the eyes or hair loss.

Supplements for hypothyroidism

Zinc and selenium function together in many body processes, including the manufacture of thyroid hormone. A deficiency of any of these minerals would result in production of lower levels of active thyroid hormone.

Low zinc levels are common in the elderly, an also in people suffering from hypothyroidism. Supplementation with zinc has been shown to reestablish a normal thyroid function in people with hypothyroidism who were zinc deficient.

Similarly, selenium supplementation may be important, as those living in areas of the world where selenium is deficient have a greater incidence of thyroid disease.

Dosage
