What is osteoporosis?

What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a disease that weakens bones, making them more likely to break, especially those in the hip, spine, and wrist. The process by which the bone becomes porous is understood: normally, 6% to 12% of the total skeleton is replaced each year. After skeletal mass peaks (between 30 and 40), bones begin to lose calcium faster than they can replace it. For women, the loss of bone density speeds up during the first three to seven years after menopause, and then slows down again. This postmenopausal increase in bone loss is believed to be caused by the decline in estrogen production.

Certain conditions that impair the body's ability to absorb calcium (such as kidney disease or hyperthyroidism) can also lead to osteoporosis.

Supplements for osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is preventable. Let have a look at which supplements can help you.

Calcium

Taking enough calcium has been shown to help a lot in keeping bones healthy. This is especially true for young women and the elderly. In postmenopausal women, taking a supplement of calcium has been shown to decrease bone loss by as much as 50%. The effects were greatest in women whose calcium intake was low, and in women with established osteoporosis. However, calcium alone provides very little benefit in protecting against osteoporosis: magnesium and vitamin D are required as well.

Magnesium

Magnesium is also an important mineral to promote healthy bones. Low magnesium level is common in women with osteoporosis, and magnesium deficiency has been associated with abnormal bones. In a study of a group of postmenopausal women, taking a supplement of magnesium on daily basis (250 - 750 mg) for 6 months followed by 250 mg per day for 6 to 18 months resulted in an increase in bone density in 71% of the women.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D has an important role in keeping your bones healthy. This is notably due to the fact that it helps calcium absorption by the body. Yet, as most people do not succeed to get the recommended intake of this vitamin per, vitamin D supplementation seems critical. Studies have found that taking calcium and vitamin D supplements together produces benefits in reducing the risk of bonesfracture.

This is especially true for elderly postmenopausal women, where combination of vitamin D and calcium significantly reduces the rate of bone loss. As vitamin D has also been found to improve muscle strength and balance, it reduces the risk of falling.

Dosage

  • Calcium: 1,000 mg per day for men before 65 and women before 50. 1500mg after. See details on the calcium page.
  • Magnesium: 350 to 500 mg per day
  • Vitamin D3: 5,000 IU per day (for general health, a dosage of 2,000 IU per day is enough, but for women or men with reduced bone density or osteoporosis, a dosage of 5,000 IU per day is more suitable)
