Supplements for skin care

This section presents supplements that can help to boost your skin health in general. If you want information related to specific types of skin, see the dedicated pages about dry skin, oily skin, mature skin, or wrinkles.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C has been found to increase production of collagen, the compound that gives your skin its elasticity and youthful appearance. It especially boosts the production of dermal collagen, which is significant for wrinkle reduction). Being also antioxidant, it enhances the skin's repair process, reduces inflammation and helps the skin to better support exposure to sunlight (although it not a reason not to use sunscreen).

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is also considered as an antioxidant vitamin. Vitamin E works to protect cell membranes from oxidation by free radicals and to prevent collagen from being destroyed. It seems to be more powerful when taken with vitamin C.

Selenium

Research has found that selenium might help protect the skin against sun damage and reduce the risk of skin cancer. It could also reverse some of the discoloration and wrinkles associated with aging. It seems to work by speeding up the skin's natural repair systems and by reducing further damage. Works well combined with vitamin C and/or vitamin E.

Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10 is a natural antioxidant, produced by the body. It has been found to help the cells grow and protects them from cancer. Over age 40, natural production of coenzyme Q10 starts to decrease, which can cause a drop in natural levels of coenzyme Q10. This is thought to contribute to aging skin. Taking a supplement of coenzyme Q10 can therefore be beneficial for aging skin, and to prevent wrinkles.
